At the suggestion of the Environment Agency, we have installed state-of-the-art technology to reduce odour and dust emissions: we operate an RTO (regenerative thermal oxidizer) and a bio filter to clean the flue gases and cooling air required for the roasting process. The RTO cleans the hot roasting gases, the smoke, for compliance with the legally required limits. Other companies use expensive catalysts for this. The technology (RTO) is standard in chocolate manufacture, for instance, but we are the pioneers in using it for coffee. In essence, the hot smoke goes through an after-burning process, effectively providing most of the energy required for the plant itself. The catalysts used to be heated with oil, which consumed significantly more energy.
